Saint-Emilion Region
Sub region of Bordeaux region
Saint-Emilion located in the eastern part of the Bordeaux region, on the Right Bank of the Dordogne river, close to the city of Libourne.
The classification currently recognises 18 Saint-Emilion Premiers Grands Crus Classés and 64 Saint-Emilion Grands Crus Classés. Estates which do not quite qualify in this category are awarded the title ‘Saint-Emilion Grand Cru’, while the rest of the properties in the AOC region are known simply as ‘Saint-Emilion’.
Within the Saint-Emilion appellation there are sub regions or "satellites" which surround the main appellation such as Lussac-Saint-Emilion, Montagne-Saint-Emilion, Puisseguin-Saint-Emilion and Saint-Georges-Saint-Emilion.

Soil type:
Center: limestone plateau surrounded by chalky soils with clay and silt. Northwest: sandy layer covering mostly clay soils. Dordogne Valley (south): Lighter soils with alluvial stones and sand
Color:
Red (intense crimson hue)
Aroma:
Strawberry and redcurrant followed by notes of soft spices, vanilla, leather and smoke
Palate:
Varies from very powerful and concentrated to refined and delicate, overall generous, warm, fleshy and full-bodied with solid but velvety tannins
Ageing:
5 to 30 years – Wonderful ageing potential
