Sub region of Catalonia region
Monstant is a wine region in Catalonia, North Eastern Spain.
The D.O. Montsant (Designation of Origin or wine appellation), despite being a recently created wine appellation, has years of wine-making history to its name.
The DO Montsant landscape is varied and mountainous. In some areas its hills are rolling, especially to the South. The soil types are also very diverse and denote a richness of origin and composition which give it a mosaic-like quality throughout the area.
Montsant has earned a reputation for its high-quality red wines, particularly those based on old Garnatxa (Garnacha) and Carinena (Carignan) vines. Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo), Spain's darling, and international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah also perform very well here.
A small quantity of white wine (based on Chardonnay, Macabeo and Garnacha Blanca) is produced, along with rosados (rosé) wines and dessert wines, for which the region was once famous.
