Douro Region

Sub region of Douro region

The Douro region lies in the North Portugal and is the home of Port. It takes its name from the Douro river, which flows east to west from the Spanish border to Oporto, where it meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Although famous for Port it produces an equal amount of outstanding red wines and although there are many different grape varieties, the following are the dominant ones, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cao and Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo).

The are three sub-regions in the Douro each expressing different aspects of Douro’s hotcontinental climate. Starting at the Spanish border is the arid Douro Superior then around the town of Pinhao is Cima Corgo and lastly Baixo Corgo which is the most westerly of the sub-regions and is best suited to the production of table wines.
