Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous of the Rhone Valley appelations and is situated in the southern Rhone. Famous for the  full-bodied, spicy red wines but also produces a small quantity of equally excellent white wine.

The name Chateauneuf-du-Pape which means "New Castle of the Pope" and refers to the fact that Under the reign of John XXII, the village becomes the summer residence of the papacy. 

The famous bottle with the embossed logo symbolizes a papal tiara placed above the keys of St. Peter is recognised around the world.

There are 13 sanctioned varieties permitted but Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault are the most popular for reds while white wines are made from Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne.
